1About Mrs. Murphy...
My name is Laura Murphy and this will be my 16th year teaching at Del Mar Pines School. I was the part-time reading and math teacher in Kindergarten for 14 years and took over as the lead teacher in the 2016/2017 school year. Before joining the Del Mar Pines community I taught for one year at Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco. I attended San Francisco State University where I received my degree in Psychology.
I feel incredibly lucky to work at Del Mar Pines for many reasons but most of all it allows me the opportunity to be a professional and also a MOM! When not at school, I can be found at home with my husband Joshua and our three beautiful daughters Aydan, Teagan and Piper. When I'm not teaching, I love to exercise, cook yummy food, make crafts, read, and just relax.
Having all three of my daughters attend Del Mar Pines (Aydan in high school, Teagan in sixth grade and Piper in fourth grade), I can relate to many of the anxieties parents feel when sending their little ones off to a new school. I can assure you that Mrs. Poyhonen and I will love, support, and encourage your son/daughter along the way as we make our way through the Adventures in Kindergarten! I know this will be a fun and memorable year and I can’t wait to get to know each and every one of you.
About Wendy Poyhonen
My name is Wendy Poyhonen and I began teaching at Del Mar Pines in 2005 as a first grade language arts and math specialist. I have been at this school for 21 years, 9 as a parent and 12 as a teacher. I love to teach and look forward to working with our new kindergarten students. This will be my second year teaching in kindergarten with Laura Murphy. I am so excited to be partnering with Mrs. Murphy as we have already worked closely together in our roles as math and language arts teachers. It is a privilege to be able to work part time and still have an impact in the lives of children.
I am originally from New Orleans, and I taught special education (certified in field) in the Louisiana, Kansas and Missouri public school systems. I have lived in San Diego since 1996 with my husband and two sons; both Del Mar Pines graduates. Alex graduated from UC Davis School of Law in May, and is working as a legal Clerk for the DA's office in Fresno. Phillip graduated from Emory University in Atlanta and is working for Google in Mountain View.
I have a BS in Special Education from William Woods College and an MBA from the University of New Orleans. In my spare time I enjoy walking/hiking (I have two dogs), reading, yoga and gardening.
It is my hope, that as the children pass through kindergarten, I will have instilled in them a sense of joy, accomplishment and a love of learning.
Favorite Quote: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” Martin Luther King Jr.
I believe we should all have a dream as powerful as Martin Luther King Jr.
